Much like humans, animals commonly suffer from skin problems. If your dog or cat spends a lot of time itching, scratchy, licking, or biting at their skin, they could be suffering from a dermatological condition or allergies.

Pets who constantly scratch despite not having fleas usually have some sort of allergy or underlying skin condition. Allergies are, by far, the most common cause of itchy skin in pets. While humans tend to experience sneezing, watery eyes, or a runny nose due to allergies, allergic reactions in animals often cause itchiness. Your pet could be allergic to many of the same things as you, including pollen, dust mites, mold, and ragweed.

Food allergies are common in pets, too, and they can cause itchy skin. Some of the most common food allergies among dogs and cats include:

  • Chicken byproducts
  • Dairy
  • Wheat
  • Corn
  • Beef byproducts
  • Soy

If your furry friend is allergic to any of these ingredients, they could experience itchiness and/or gastrointestinal upset.

Ringworm and mange are common skin conditions not caused by allergies. Pets can also develop lesions and secondary infections from scratching and chewing. At Bellevue Animal Hospital, we are here to help with all of these issues and more. We’ll start by running appropriate tests to determine the cause of your pet’s discomfort and symptoms. From there, we’ll get them started on an effective treatment plan.
